When the oil filter housing gasket leaks, the oil goes onto the engineβs serpentine belt and various other components. If not addressed the oil will make the serpentine belt slippery and more likely to separate from the pulleys. When the belt comes off suddenly the alternator and power steering pump stop working! This causes a loss of power steering and stops the electrical charging system. Even more alarming, the belt can get sucked into the engine through the front main seal. When this happens belt material often also gets caught in the timing chain and other internal engine parts, potentially including the oil pick-up tube which clogs, causing oil starvation in the engine and leading to serious engine damage (such as seizing) requiring a complete engine rebuild or replacement.
