Across the country many families are hitting the road for Thanksgiving Day Weekend.  What is the safest and least headache time to travel? What should you look out for if you drive a BMW or Mercedes? Here are some helpful tips to make your Thanksgiving Weekend fun and safe.

Upwards of 75 percent of Americans will be on the road during the Thanksgiving Weekend.

Before you go you should prepare yourself

One of the most important aspects of embarking on a long road trip is to give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. Most experts recommend to leave as early as possible on Wednesday. If you are one of the unlucky ones that have to work on Wednesday, we recommend to not leave right after work. Instead let the rush hour traffic die down. Go eat dinner and relax and rest a bit before getting behind the wheel. This will help avoid as much frustration with traffic and road rage. Nothing is worse than being tired, rushed and trying to get out of the New York City Metro area traffic! I know you drive a luxury german brand like your Mercedes Benz or your Audi but you owe it to yourself to take it easy during the Thanksgiving Weekend.

Some things to check out on your BMW, Mini Cooper, Mercedes Benz, Audi or Volkswagen

Driving locally around Queens and Brooklyn can be a lot different on your vehicle than taking a long road trip. For instance BMW and Mercedes vehicles are very sensitive to voltage. You should check your charging and battery system to avoid a costly breakdown. Another important system to have checked is cooling system. Long trips are very hard on your vehicle’s cooling system such as your radiator, water pump, thermostat and expansion reserve tank. The last thing you want is to be on the side of the road with your Audi or Volkswagen overheating! Lastly another safety item you most certainly should have inspected are your brakes and tires. The braking system is vitally important because well… you need your brakes to be working properly of course. Besides that tires can also be a big contributing factor to how well your Mini Cooper stick to the road both in dry and wet weather and also how well your vehicle actually stops (brakes).

Bullet list of additional tips for traveling this Thanksgiving

  • Pack a flash light and batteries
  • Jumper cables or mini boosters
  • phone chargers or mini boosters that also double as small electronic chargers
  • A blanket and extra clothes
  • jack to replace a tire
  • safety cones and flares in case you get stuck on the side of the road

Just remember to mention this blog post and we at M-Spec Performance would be more than happy to inspect your vehicle before you take your trip. Give us a call at (718) 395-6095 or book an appointment here.
