Mini Coopers are fun cars to drive in the city and are ranked among the top subcompact cars however, they may encounter a few problems. Unfortunately, some of these problems are inevitable and should be repaired immediately. With routine maintenance, you may prevent many of these issues and increase the longevity of your car. Here at M-spec Performance, we specialize in the repair of many European makes and models such as the Mini Cooper. Below are preventative practices and common issues we face when servicing a Mini Cooper:
OIL CHANGE
An oil change is something that should be done routinely in any car. Mini Coopers should have an oil change done about every 4 months or 4 to 5 thousand miles. A timing chain noise is a common and severe issue Mini Coopers will face along with other serious issues that arise from having low or infrequently changed oil. Getting into a habit of frequently changing your oil will save you lots of money and aggravation in the future.
BRAKE PADS & FLUID
Brake pads are routinely replaced due to wear and tear. These pads are essential to your safety and should be inspected and replaced immediately. Brake fluid services should be performed between 40,000 and 60,000 miles. The brake fluid will be flushed and bled to prevent any brake related issues.
TRANSMISSION FLUID
Changing the transmission fluid every 30,000 to 40,000 miles will greatly improve the longevity of your vehicle and thousands of dollars in repairs. Routine inspection and replacement of gears, bearings, pulleys, and valve body are recommended as needed. Regardless of how many miles the car has, transmission components should be inspected and replaced accordingly.
SPARK PLUGS & IGNITION COILS
Spark plugs are recommended to be changed at 100,000 miles and inspected around 75,000. While replacing the spark plugs, it’s recommended to replace the 4 ignition coils in order to prevent misfires.
WATER PUMP & THERMOSTAT HOUSING LEAKS
The water pump should be replaced around 50,000 miles. This pump can leak coolant or become noisy, causing the engine to overheat. The thermostat housing will also cause engine temperature issues. This should be replaced before signs of heavy wear in order to prevent future engine problems. Both of these issues will lead to a check engine warning.
COOLANT
Replacing coolant fluid every 2 years or 30,000 miles is recommended. This is done in order to prevent the engine from overheating. In case of a leak, this fluid is drained and replaced.
These are only a few of the most common maintenance practices and problematic issues we face at M-spec Performance.
