The Mini Cooper may be the best all-around vehicle to own in New York City. With its modest dimensions (dare we say cute), great gas mileage and superb German Engineering courtesy of BMW there is no wonder why so many Mini Cooper owners love their cars! Every car design however always has a flaw here or there. For Mini Cooper it is the timing chain and tensioner noise that affects a small minority of Mini Coopers. Fortunately, M-Spec Performance are experts in the servicing and repair of Mini Cooper timing chain and tensioners. We have been the leading authority on all things Mini Cooper in the Queens and Brooklyn area.
Can you explain what is the problem with the Mini Cooper timing chain?
BMW who is the parent company of Mini Cooper without a doubt makes amazing cars. However, an inherent design flaw happens with the timing chain and the tensioner. BMW claims timing chains are lifetime parts and do not need servicing. Unfortunately, a number of 2007 – 2011 Mini Coopers started seeing timing chain failures at around 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Luckily enough Mini Cooper owners made enough noise to where Mini Cooper acknowledges the problem and will service owners up to 50,000 miles. The problem originates when the timing chain tensioner itself fails which causes slack in the chain and/or the chain falling off or failing. Signs of this problem are the dreaded “timing chain noise” which can sound like a metallic clacking from the engine. If the chain has failed it can cause engine failure.
My Mini Cooper Engine has a metallic clacking noise. What should I do?
If your Mini Cooper is experiencing the timing chain noise, the best thing to do is to stop driving and give us a call. We recommend having us inspect and examine your Mini Cooper to prescribe the best course of action. We may have to get invasive and remove your front timing cover to expose what kind of damage the timing chain may have caused.
This sounds very alarming, I don’t have the noise yet. What can I do to help prevent this problem from happening?
Our first advice is to always stay on top of your oil change service intervals and always use Mini Cooper approved oil. Using the proper Oil grade and Oil weight are also important. Secondly, preventative repairs are important. Before the timing chain problem occurs it is a good idea to replace your timing chain tensioner and timing chain so you can enjoy your Mini Cooper for years of trouble-free enjoyment.
